Over haar werk

De schilderijen van Johanna Willemsen vertegenwoordigen een poging om de toeschouwer te laten zien dat onze ‘Umwelt’ niet alleen dáár voor ons is als een geheel van reeds gestructureerde betekenissen waarin de dingen een duidelijk afgebakende naam en functie hebben.

Door de dingen te ontdoen van hun eenduidigheid - het ‘geruis’ van het benoemd worden - en deze uit hun alledaagse context te verplaatsen, doet ze het geschilderde als het ware ontsnappen aan de ‘ zwaartekracht’ van deze context en lijken de dingen soms te zweven in een opengebroken, onbepaalde ruimte.

About her work:

Johanna Willemsen’s paintings represent an attempt to demonstrate that the world (Umwelt) which surrounds us not only appears to us as a totality of already structured meaning, in which the things possess a clearly defined name and function.By stripping the things of their unambiguousness - ‘the interference’ that accompanies their being named - and to till these out of their everyday context, she allows them to escape from the ‘ gravity’ of this context, thereby giving them the appearance of hovering in indetermined space.
