Din A4 - Barb Bobdy
Biography
Barbara Bondy (born Alberta, Canada) holds an M.F.A. with a concentration in 2-D from Southern
Illinois University at Carbondale; an Honours BFA in Visual Art from the University of Windsor, ON,
Canada; and an Ontario College Diploma in Photography from Sheridan College, ON.
Bondy’s interests in the correlations between science, mathematics, art and philosophy inform
her creative research which is directed primarily toward exploring, through the mediums of drawing
and photography, the nature, mechanics, relational complexities and potential of the human mind and
brain.
She is the recipient of an Individual Fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts
(2007) and has been awarded a Summer Studio Residency at Columbus State University, GA at the Corn
Center for the Arts (2008) as well as residencies at the Lillian E. Smith Center for the Arts, GA
(2007 and 2008) and Hambidge Center for the Arts an Sciences, GA (2008).
Bondy has exhibited her work in the U.S. and Canada including the Thames Art Gallery (Canada),
Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center (Cincinnati, OH), The International Gallery
of Contemporary Art, (Anchorage, AK); Area 405, (Baltimore, MD); Mobile Museum of Art, (Mobile,
AL); Gallerythe, (Brooklyn, NY), Center for Contemporary Art Sacramento, CA and Texas Woman’s
University.
Barb Bondy is Associate Professor of Art at Auburn University. Since 2005, she has taught
drawing classes for incarcerated individuals in Alabama State Prisons for Auburn University’s
nationally recognized Alabama Prison Arts & Education Project. The program is built on the
premise that education and exposure to the arts and humanities are integral to human
advancement.

Statement
In my studio practice the graphical dialogue of drawing provides a means to gain understanding
of complex problems; and, it is a means of conjecture with which I may propose ideas to a viewer.
My drawings are visualizations or, thought experiments, that arrive out of ruminations on art,
philosophy and science. My overriding interests point to questions about the functions of the human
mind and brain, the relationship between the two, and how, through various modes of perception and
states of consciousness, the mind and brain form an individual’s experience of the world.
I often use scientific theory as analogies to explore how the mind and brain work together. For
example, I have proposed through drawings how the second law of thermodynamics, in particular,
dissipation and entropy, works as a meaningful analogy for proposing how thoughts may form and
develop or decay over the lifetime of a human being. How does a thought evolve? How do ideas
dissipate or join others to form new ideas or concepts? The second law of thermal dynamics is an
expression of the universal law of increasing
entropy.
Within the process of seeking greater understanding of the mechanizations of the mind and brain,
drawing serves as a portal; it is an aesthetic system through which I can enter for the purpose of
both mining information from within my own interior space and to communicate my thoughts to others
in the exterior world.
