Biography
Born in 1929 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire (UK) First drawings were of horse-drawn milk floats
about 6 years old…
1940 Almondbury Grammar School, Huddersfield; then The Salt High School, Shipley, Yorkshire.
1947 National Service. Personal clerk to Field Marshal Montgomery, Dover House, Whitehall.
1949 Sheffield College of Art for five years: National Diploma in Painting, 1953 Obtains good
grounding in draughtsmanship from Eric Jones. Two major artists, Jack Smith and Derek Greaves were
just graduating from Sheffield and a close friend at Sheffield was John Hoyland, now the leading
British abstract painter of today.

A Diploma graduate of the Sheffield College of Art, U.K.
Ted first exhibited with the Sheffield Society of Artists and was then invited to exhibit
with the Yorkshire Society of Artists alongside Henry Moore, Alan Davie, David Hockney and John
Hoyland in 1957, in Leeds City Art Gallery.
He joined London publishers Faber & Faber, who built a reputation for promoting the best
young authors and poets of the day under the guidance of director T.S. Eliot. Took courses in
Typography and Book Illustration at the Central School of Art. Paints portrait of Vice Chairman,
Peter du Sautoy; paints oils of London squares and landscapes near Epping Forest where he shares a
studio with artist Terry Lee.
Exhibitions and chronology
1960 After illustration of 3 Faber books, leaves Faber and spends nine years in Sri Lanka as Art
Director to a leading Publishing and Newspaper group
Paints numerous landscapes including tea plantations and later on paints portraits and genre
scenes of his children growing up
Expresses his satirical streak as political cartoonist for Sun Newspaper group, Colombo.
1969 - returns to London, practising as freelance designer and illustrator and produces first
abstracts in acrylics, gouache and pastels. joins staff of British Oxygen Co., Barnes, west London.
1982 - freelance artist with Strategic Advertising, London; designs display stands for both
the British and the Japanese pavilions in Dusseldorf for the International DRUPA print exhibition.
1983 - emigrates to Fuengirola, Spain, works as a freelance artist and graphic designer, one
major client being the Salón Varietés, Fuengirola for whom he designed theatre posters and
programmes for many years.

1993 – a new period of painting is initiated - flower pieces, still life and he explores new
media - pastel, oil pastel, acrylic and watercolour. Holds a very successful Retrospective
Exhibition of “50 years of Painting” in the Sala de Exposiciones, Los Boliches.(Fuengirola, Spain)
2003 - exhibits with the Málaga Assoc. of Watercolourists and Benalmádena Town Hall purchases his
painting "Corrida de Toros, Barcelona.",
In the same year had a one-man show in the Casa de la Cultura, Arroyo de la Miel, Spain, with
over 800 visitors.
In October has watercolour in joint show at Sala de Exposiciones, Málaga; the show then
transferred to Antequera.(Spain)

2004 - 2008 exhibits 3 paintings with NAPA at Mariner’s Gallery, St. Ives, Cornwall (UK),
followed by Retrospective in Riviera Gallery, Fuengirola,(Spain) with permanent exhibition in the
gallery where Ted also taught painting in oils and acrylics.
2009 - June, 1st Festival Internacional de Arte Marbella (26 paintings).
October - International Marbella Art Charity, Event Gallery, San Pedro,(18 paintings)
2009 . 2010 Participates in group shows of the Din A4 Project in Malaga (Archivo Municipal
and Noche en Blanco, Sala Moreno Villa) and Museo Provincial Santa Rosa, Argentina,

His works are held in private and other collections in England, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, South Africa and Australia.
