Maria Kapteijns, Geboren: 30 juli 1965, Eindhoven.
Opleiding: Koninklijke Academie voor Kunst en Vormgeving in 's-Hertogenbosch
Diploma gehaald in 1991, nominatie voor de Lucasprijs, ’s-Hertogenbosch.
Sinds 2010 bezig met een Master Cultuurwetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Tilburg.

Over mijn werk

In mijn werk hebben heel lang insecten de boventoon gevoerd, inzoomend (gigantisch uitvergrote vleugels) en uitzoomend. Bij het uitzoomen ging ik uit van de stad Eindhoven en al het leven daarbinnen. Wat mij ging fascineren is het idee dat een groep (een mierennest bijvoorbeeld) een superorganisme is: het mierennest reageert veel slimmer dan een samenwerking tussen individuele insecten mogelijk zou kunnen maken.
Gaandeweg ging ik mij steeds verder verdiepen in de wereld van de mensen, me afvragend of mensen ook een onderdeel zijn van het superorganisme “groep mensen”. De stad werd een symbool voor dit superorganisme. In het werk wat ik maak, komt die stad voor, maar ook het individu dat springt, zweeft, los is van de vloer.
Bij insecten ben ik een poos bezig geweest met de zoemtonen die voortgebracht worden door de vleugeltjes, de beweging maakt dus de “muziek”. Ik denk dat dat ook is wat ik probeer te benaderen met de springende mensen: ze vliegen dan wel niet als zoemende insecten, maar ze zijn wel mooi in hun pogingen.

About my work:

In my work, insects have led a leading role for a long time, whether enlarged to unnatural sizes, or scaled down. For the scaling down, I took the city Eindhoven and all life inside. What started to fascinate me was the idea of a group, like an ants nest, is a superorganism: the nest responds far more intelligent than what would be possible by simple cooperation between individual insects.
Along the way, I took an increasingly closer look at the world of people, wondering whether humans are also part of the superorganism “group of people”. The city became a symbol of this superorganism. In my work, this city is featured, but also the individual, who jumps, floats and hovers.
With the insects, I have been busy for a while with the buzzing sound produced by the wings, making the “music”. I think that is what I’m trying to approach with the jumping people: they don’t fly like the buzzing insects, but they are beautiful in their attempts.
